All You Need to Practice Pilates at Home

Posted November 02, 2021

People often ask “what equipment should I have to practise Pilates at home?”. Pilates can be practised with as little as a mat, but if you are wanting to spice up your Pilates practise here are some of my go-to pieces of equipment. Equipment can be used to add assistance to your exercises or add challenge.

Pilates Magic Circle

1. Magic Circle

The Magic Circle is made from pliable metal or rubber and is designed to provide resistance to your Pilates exercises.  It is a great tool for toning the inner thighs and arms.  You are sure to develop a love-hate relationship with this deceptively simple piece of equipment.

2. Theraband

Therabands come in a range of resistance levels depending on your needs. Most therabands are made from latex so be sure to check if you have an allergy.  The theraband adds resistance to upper body exercises and can be used as an assistance tool for intermediate and advanced exercises. They are great for strength training.

3. Pilates Ball

The Pilates ball is a great little addition to your at home set up.  It can be used to add challenge to foundation exercises by adding a balance component to exercises or it can be used to assist with modifications.  It also makes a great pillow for side lying exercises.

4. Foam Roller

Foam rollers are a definite must have.  Foam rolling is a self-myofascial release (SMR) technique. It can help relieve muscle tightness, soreness, and inflammation, and increase your joint range of motion. Foam rolling can be an effective tool to add to your warm-up or cooldown, before and after exercise.

5. Trigger Balls

Trigger point therapy exercises are a wonderful way to help release tight, knotted up muscles. … A trigger point ball is one simple tool that can be used for your trigger point therapy exercises. It makes a great addition to your home fitness kit.

6. Hand Weights

Hand weights can be a great addition to add challenge to those your upper body and core.  Choose weights between 1kg and 3kgs for your pilates program.

7. Pilates Socks

Essential to your Pilates kit is a pair or multiple pairs of Pilates socks.  Pilates socks have grips on the base to prevent your from slipping during your mat or reformer class.
